The Fifth Way continued: Lent 2009

Download 01 The Fifth Way continued  Part two from last week.  We expanded on Jesus' radical strategy for life.  He presents a new way of living in the midst of empire that cut through the four responses of his day.  His was a radical counter temple movement that pushed through the limits of national liberation to a universal liberation that would be experienced by people submitting themselves to the self giving Kingdom of God.  Jesus boldly expressed that God's Kingdom was revealed in his own life and ministry. Jesus proclaimed that he embodied Israel's and therefore the world's true God.  The sign that this was true would be his death and then his vindicating resurrection from the dead.  Jesus demonstrates the way of incarnation, in a world that only knew collusion, exclusion, preservation, and violent revolution.  To follow in this way is to know, be and follow Jesus intimately and daily.  Shalom.

The Fifth Way: Lent 2009

Unfortunately, I won't be able to post this teaching till next week as I am currently away from the office.  Sorry, especially to the Palm's who I know must be waiting eagerly from India just to hear my voice... ;)

This is a two part teaching as we've moved from personal lenten disciplines to the broader history in which Jesus' strategy to embody the Kingdom of God fits.  So we will expand what we started this coming Sunday.  On a related note, just a week and a half till Easter Friends!  Prepare to celebrate!

Download "Fasting and Feasting"  Why is it that everyone else is fasting and Jesus and his disciples aren't fasting?  This was a common question for Jesus and his response, in typical Jesus fashion, is a bit cryptic.  We explore the historical dynamics of corporate fasting in Jesus' day and then the prevalent practice of fasting in the early church through the 18th century.  Is a regular rhythm of fasting and feasting an important and formative part of being a follower of Jesus?  Shalom.
