William Pannapacker has an exceptional piece in The Chronicle on recent studies on introversion, but it his opening experience that tells perhaps the whole of the story. As the piece rolls along he sketches some studies, one of which makes this significant observation: “According to Cain, the 19th century valued personal character based on seriousness, discipline, and honor, but the 20th century emphasized personality: selling oneself and being a “mighty likeable fellow.”

Reclaiming the Mission » The Gospel Coalition: Reprise and In Retrospect

There can be no doubt, The Gospel Coalition (TGC) has been galvanizing many younger evangelicals to re-think their theology and practice (especially if it is of the Reformed variety.) I applaud this new theological energy. My question nonetheless is (given its moniker) will TGC be a force for coalition or expedition? “Coalition” describes the coalescing of a group of people or nations to agree on some understandings in order to defend some boundary or prepare for war (think Pres. Bush’s “coalition of the willing”). “Expedition” on the other hand, is the organizing of a group to adequately prepare for an exploration/adventure into unknown territory. Will TGC be a coalition for the hardening of some doctrinal lines in order to defend boundaries and/or launch an attack of some kind (say against others who don’t agree with its take on Reformed theology)? Or will TGC be a force for the preparation of missionaries (in doctrine and practice) to engage the unknown territories of the new cultures of post Christendom? Will TGC be a coalition or an expedition?

Thanksgiving and Remembering the Other

Desmond Tutu would like to know what it would be like to be tall.

 I have come to deeply appreciate Desmond Tutu and this little quote made me laugh.  On announcing his retirement from public life, he was asked if he had any regrets.  He said a tiny part of him wished he could have been a doctor. "And maybe somebody might tell me what it is like to be tall."

Desmond Tutu is an amazing Christian man and is now 79 years old.  He spent four hours in prayer everyday for his people, was a leader in the commission for truth and reconciliation and led the charge in peacefully dismantling apartheid in South Africa.  He is 5' 5", has a great sense of humor and contagious laugh to boot.  I love this guy and suppose I could tell him what it's like to be 5' 6".

This Summer is Literally Speeding By!

If you feel like the summer is flying by you are right.  Nasa states that because of the earthquake in Chile this past March, the earth's rotation increased making our day 1.26 microseconds shorter.

Losing 1.26 microseconds a day means that in 2174 years, one year will be exactly one second shorter than it is right now.  Crazy how time flies by isn't it!?
